All dental schools and colleges in the United States require candidates to take the Dental Admission Test in order to be considered for admission. Candidates should have completed at least one year of collegiate education, including foundation-level courses in biology, and general and organic chemistry. The one-year qualifying period of college education is a minimum standard, with most candidates completing at least two years.

The DAT is conducted by the American Dental Association (ADA). Written tests were discontinued in 1998, and have since been conducted on computer, practically the whole year round. It is strongly recommended that candidates for dental school admission participate in the Dental Admission Testing Program well in advance of their intended school enrolment.

The DAT AudioLearn offers more than 3 hours of material, or some 500 equivalent pages, reviewing the entire science syllabus for the Dental Admission Test. This is conveniently organized by topic heading, in a user-friendly way that allows easy reference to any part of the course.
